Breathing on SkiErg: find an effective rhythm without tensing up

On SkiErg, a few overly aggressive pulls are enough to transform an easy start into a struggle with your breath. Before looking for a perfect cadence, the challenge is to coordinate movement and breathing without tensing up. Here are guidelines for building this coordination, as well as the place for a nasal strip when you want to improve your comfort around the nose.

Why do we quickly lose our breath on SkiErg?

The SkiErg requires a coordinated effort, not just the arms. However, we can let ourselves be attracted by the number displayed from the first shots: pull hard, accelerate, then discover that the pace will not be sustainable. Breathing then becomes jerky and the shoulders contract.

Before changing the way you inhale, observe your departure. An overly ambitious look, a very tight grip or a disorderly movement can make the session uncomfortable. No nasal accessory corrects an effort you cannot sustain.

The first improvement therefore consists of choosing a pace that leaves room. You can then accelerate gradually, while maintaining clean technique and breathing that accompanies the movement.

Coordinate traction and return

Position yourself stably and keep your knees flexible. The movement combines controlled flexion at the hips and action of the arms. Avoid seeking all the power only with the shoulders or excessively extending the path of the hands.

At low intensity, you can try exhaling during the pull phase, then letting the inhale come back during the straightening. Take this cue as a coordination exercise, not as a mandatory rule for every pull and every athlete.

Do not lock breathing into counting

When demand increases, a movement breathing cycle may no longer suit you. Let the frequency adjust. If you are holding your breath to stay in the chosen rhythm, simplify: slow down, relax your hands and find continuous ventilation.

A short and readable discovery session

Here is an example of a technical exercise, to adapt to your level and your program. This is not a maximum test: the goal is to observe the link between your gesture and your breath.

  • Start with a few very easy minutes to get your bearings.
  • Perform three one-minute periods at comfortable intensity, with one minute easy between them.
  • On the first one, simply observe your natural breathing.
  • On the second, try the exhalation mark during traction, without forcing.
  • On the third, keep what seems most fluid to you.

Finish quietly and note what has changed. If coordination becomes a source of tension, do not try to maintain it at all costs. A trainer can help you adjust the movement to your body type and your practice.

Where is a nose strip placed on SkiErg?

The BreathersBliss Intense nasal strips gently lift the wings of the nose to accompany the nasal opening during wear. They can be tried if you are looking for more comfort in this area, especially during warm-up or regular work at moderate intensity.

They do not require you to breathe exclusively through your nose. Over an intense interval, using the mouth in addition remains compatible with the nasal strip. The outcome to evaluate is your nasal sensation, not a promise of extra cadence or power.

Apply the nasal strip before sweating, on clean, dry skin, without cream or oil. Check your position at rest then during the warm-up. If it pulls or gets in the way, stop to remove it rather than handling it while continuing to pull on the handles.

Frequent errors during a HYROX sequence

In a sequence, you can arrive at the SkiErg already out of breath. Wanting to immediately recover lost time sometimes leads to leaving too quickly. Instead, choose a controlled start, then adjust according to your comfort and the work that remains to be done.

Do not confuse resistance adjustment and session quality either. A higher setting does not automatically make your technique more effective. Find a setting that you are comfortable with, with the help of a coach if necessary, and keep it stable during your breathing tests.

Finally, do not test a new look strategy, a new technique and a nasal strip at the same time. Introduce changes separately: you'll know which ones really improve your experience.

FAQ — Breathing, SkiErg and nasal strip

When should you expire on SkiErg?

At easy intensity, exhaling during the pull can serve as a cue. This is not an obligation: favor continuous and natural breathing if this coordination makes you tense.

Should you inhale only through your nose?

No. The respiratory mode must respond to the effort. You can use the nose and mouth, with or without a nasal strip, without trying to artificially limit your ventilation.

Why am I out of breath from the start?

A start that is too fast is something to check, as is strong tension. Reduce the intensity. Unusual shortness of breath, discomfort or pain requires you to stop and seek appropriate advice.

Does the nasal strip replace technical work?

No. It provides comfort at the entrance to the nose. Coordination, pace management and training remain at the heart of your practice on SkiErg.

How to prevent it from coming off in the gym?

Place it before sweating on clean, dry skin, then limit friction with the towel on its edges. The Intense reference is designed for grip during sport.

When to do a first test?

During a short and easy session, not during a timed test. You'll be able to assess feel and grip without changing your training goals.

A rhythm that can be repeated

On SkiErg, the best coordination is the one that remains fluid when the minutes accumulate. Build your benchmarks gradually and use BreathersBliss as a comfort supplement, in a routine that you master.
