Nasal strips for a cold: comfort when your nose feels blocked

BreathersBliss Lab · Practical guide

A nasal strip may make breathing through the nose feel more comfortable during a cold when supporting the sides of the nose helps. It does not cure the infection or remove swelling inside the nose. Whether it is worth wearing depends on your symptoms and the condition of the skin underneath it.

At a glance

Try it for nasal comfort, not as a cure. Use a fresh strip on clean, completely dry, intact skin. If frequent nose-blowing has left the skin sore, take a break from adhesive.

01

Why blowing your nose may not clear the blockage

A cold involves more than a collection of mucus. The tissues lining the nose can also become swollen. An external strip acts at the entrance of the nose, supporting its sides; it does not act on the virus or wash away secretions.

That distinction explains why two people with a stuffy nose can report different experiences. One notices an easier nasal breath; another still feels blocked further inside. Read our guide to the nasal valve for the mechanical explanation.

The NHS common cold guidance describes care and reasons to seek advice. A change in comfort after applying a strip is not evidence that the infection has cleared.

02

Make the first trial easy to assess

Try the strip while awake and resting, rather than putting it on for the first time just as you fall asleep. Breathe normally. You are checking whether the position feels comfortable and the entrance of the nose feels less restricted, not trying to create a strong pulling sensation.

  • If it feels comfortable, continue only within the instructions for your strip.
  • If there is no difference, check the placement once rather than stretching or doubling up the adhesive.
  • If there is pain, itching or an unpleasant pull, remove it gently and stop using it.

This is a comfort check, not a diagnostic test. Persistent blockage needs its own assessment. Our nasal strip placement guide shows the positioning points without turning the trial into a breathing challenge.

03

Fit application around tissues and nasal care

Frequent nose-blowing makes application less straightforward than on an ordinary evening. Complete any nasal care you already use according to its directions, then prepare the outside of the nose.

  1. Wash your hands and inspect the contact area.
  2. Clean gently, avoiding repeated rubbing of tender skin.
  3. Allow the skin to dry completely.
  4. Apply a new strip evenly, leaving the nostril openings clear.
  5. Follow the BreathersBliss instructions, including pressing the ends for 30 seconds.

A protective balm underneath the strip may interfere with adhesion. Do not scrub away necessary skin care just to make a strip stick. If the area needs a greasy barrier or is already sore, leave the strip off.

If a tissue catches an edge, do not add glue or tape. A replacement requires clean, dry, comfortable skin again. Sometimes the simplest choice is to continue the evening without one.

04

A strip is not treatment for sinus trouble

Pressure around the cheeks or forehead is a different question from support at the nostril entrance. A strip does not drain the sinuses or establish whether you have sinusitis. Seek professional advice if symptoms worsen or do not improve as expected.

Eye swelling, changes in vision or severe unusual facial pain need prompt medical assessment. Significant breathing difficulty is also not a problem to troubleshoot by trying a stronger strip. The French health insurance guidance on sinusitis sets out warning signs that should not be ignored.

When asking for help, describe how long the blockage has lasted, whether one side is worse and any associated symptoms. Your response to an adhesive strip is only one observation, not the diagnosis.

05

Returning to your usual routine after the cold

There is no universal number of days to count from your last sneeze. Check the skin instead: it should be intact and comfortable. Cracks, soreness or persistent redness are reasons to wait, not reasons to choose a more aggressive adhesive.

Start again with a fresh strip at a time when you can check how it feels. Follow the wear instructions for your reference; do not extend a session to make up for days without a strip. Our adhesion troubleshooting guide covers moisture, skin products and friction.

BreathersBliss Intense nasal strips are external, drug-free and single-use. Their role is nasal comfort. They should not replace recommended care or be used to decide whether you are well enough for demanding exercise.

Frequently asked questions

Will a nasal strip clear a cold?

No. It may make the entrance of the nose feel more comfortable, but it does not treat the infection or remove internal swelling.

Can I wear one at night with a blocked nose?

Follow your product instructions and check comfort while awake first. Do not apply adhesive to sore skin or rely on a strip to treat a breathing disorder.

Should nasal care come before the strip?

Complete your usual care according to its directions, then clean and fully dry the outside of the nose before application.

Can I put a strip over a protective balm?

A greasy layer can interfere with adhesion. If your skin needs protection or is irritated, keep the necessary care and skip the strip.

Does it help with sinusitis?

It is not a sinusitis treatment. Worsening, persistent or unusual symptoms call for professional advice, not stronger adhesive.

When can I start wearing strips again?

When the contact area is intact and comfortable, in line with the product directions. Continuing nasal blockage may need separate assessment.
